On Thursday, 12 February, we marked a truly significant moment in the history of Highbury with the launch of the Highbury Old Boys Johannesburg Branch at our first official reunion held in Johannesburg.
Hosted at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, the evening brought together Old Boys spanning nearly seven decades — from the Class of 1951 through to 2018. It was a powerful reminder that while time may pass, the Highbury spirit endures far beyond the school gates.

The evening began with a meaningful and forward-looking address from Headmaster Mr Roland Lacock, who shared an inspiring update on the current state of the school and its vision for the future. His message reaffirmed that Highbury continues to grow in strength, purpose and impact.
We were then privileged to hear from one of our most esteemed Old Boys, Mr Michael Lamb, who transported us back to Highbury in the late 1940s. His reflections were rich with character and charm, offering a vivid glimpse into school life decades ago. His story beautifully illustrated how Highbury continues to weave itself into the lives of its boys long after they leave – from family connections, including his daughter’s marriage to fellow Old Boy Dale Parker, to a remarkable encounter years later on a golf course when a gentleman joined his game and introduced himself as none other than Sholto McMillan, former Headmaster of Highbury.
Well done to Andre Brink (Class of 1978) on winning the lucky draw including Highbury merchandise and an incredible two night stay for two at Umzolozolo Private Safari Lodge in the Nambiti Hills Game Reserve. Thank you to Shane Fainsinger (Class of 2003) who made the winning bid to take home the painting of the Highbury Chapel. All proceeds raised from the lucky draw and the silent auction went to the Highbury Education Trust, which funds scholarships and bursaries for deserving boys and assists with the ongoing maintenance and development of the school.
It was an evening filled with nostalgia, laughter and meaningful reconnection. Stories were shared, new connections were formed and old friendships rekindled. The launch of the Johannesburg Branch represents more than just a reunion, it is the foundation of what we trust will become a strong and growing Old Boys community in the city. As our Old Boy network expands across South Africa and beyond, we continue to create opportunities for networking, reconnection and mentorship, supporting the next generation of Highbury boys as they step into the world.
We look forward to this being the first of many gatherings for our Johannesburg Old Boys, as we continue to build a community rooted in friendship, shared history and the enduring values of Highbury.
