A Legacy of Leadership, Family, and Giving Back

For Old Boy Morris Crookes (Class of 1980), Highbury isn’t just a school—it’s the foundation of a family legacy and the birthplace of values that have shaped his life and career. From his time as a young student in the 80s to his ongoing contributions as an Old Boy and parent, Morris embodies the spirit of Highbury with unwavering pride.

Together with his brother Graeme, also a Highbury Old Boy, Morris has carried the lessons of integrity, community, and perseverance into their professional lives. In 2016, they co-founded Finningley SA, a financial services company based in Kloof. Drawing on their combined 30 years of experience, the Crookes brothers built a business rooted in integrity and moral purpose, specialising in short-term insurance, investments, and risk planning.

“At Finningley, we’re committed to building a brand that feels like family, we are committed to dealing with friends, family and like-minded people. We see it as a long-term partnership that we are committed to. To ensure that whatever life throws at you, you have adequate protection and cover that will assist you in your life long journey” says Morris; it’s about adding value to people’s lives and ensuring their well-being.

Family Ties to Highbury

During Morris and Graeme’s Highbury journey they saw many new facilities added to the school including building the resource center and extensions to the Library in 1978 and construction of the school’s new swimming pool in 1980. These projects, funded by Old Boys and parents & the school, embody the strong sense of unity in the Highbury community that continues to leave a legacy for the generations that follow. On the sports field, Morris and Graeme made Highbury proud as part of their Cricket, Rugby and Hockey teams, making notable achievements all the way through.

The Crookes family’s connection to Highbury deepened with the next generation. Morris’ sons, Todd and Matthew, became proud Highbury boys, continuing the family tradition. Tragically, the family faced heartbreak with the loss of Todd to cancer. In 2015, the Highbury community rallied around the Crookes family, hosting a cricket match in Todd’s honour. The event saw players and supporters wearing pink shirts and ribbons as a symbol of support. Matthew graduated in 2017, continuing his academic and sporting journey at Kearsney College, as his father did before him.

Giving Back

Morris has remained deeply involved in the Highbury community. As a member of the Highbury Sustainability Committee, he devotes his time and expertise to advancing the school’s mission. His efforts focus on driving donations to the Highbury Education Trust, which funds bursaries and scholarships for boys who might not otherwise afford the privilege of a Highbury education. The Trust also ensures the preservation of the school’s exceptional facilities and estate for future generations.

The boys recall the opening of the Resources Centre in 1978 and the hours spent watching Afrikaans programs on television and being subjected to talks by teachers on various subjects. This year, some 47 years later, Highbury is raising funds to upgrade the library once again, which is in serious need of refurbishment. Plans for the space have been drafted and with Morris at the helm, we know there will be great strides taken towards achieving this goal.
