Highbury Old Boys at Spirit Day

This year’s Spirit Day was made all the more special with the addition of an Old Boys reunion. The morning began at the Chapel, where Headmaster Mr Roland Lacock offered a heartfelt welcome and a comprehensive update on the school’s progress and recent projects. His address painted a vibrant picture of a school continuing to flourish while holding fast to the traditions and values that have shaped it for over a century. Adding to the sense of nostalgia was the appearance of much-loved past teachers, Mr and Mrs Kerley.

Following the chapel gathering, guests embarked on a guided school tour which included a visit to the Highburian, a dedicated museum space showcasing treasured artefacts, photographs, and memorabilia from Highbury’s long and proud history.

The highlight of the day for many came on the sports field, where the Old Boys gathered to cheer on the Highbury 1st XV rugby team in a spirited match against St Charles College. The team did not disappoint, delivering a thrilling performance and securing a well-earned victory. The morning concluded at the Cricket Pavilion, where refreshments were served and memories were shared over eats and drinks.

One of the most moving moments of the day came from Keith Bonsall, the oldest Old Boy in attendance, from the Standard 6 Class of 1949. He spoke fondly of his time at Highbury and reflected on the values instilled in him during those formative years—values, he said, that have guided him throughout his life.

Adding an element of excitement, the silent auction of a beautiful Rowena Bush painting was won by Martin Steyn (Standard 6 Class of 1981), while the raffle prize went to Andrew Shedlock (Standard 6 Class of 1976), rounding off the festivities with a sense of celebration and good fortune. Spirit Day 2025 was a beautiful reminder of the strong community that exists within the Highbury family.
